Here’s a question for New Years: What is it that makes you really, truly happy?  Being healthy, wealthy or wise?  A lot of folks are talking about happiness these days, and new year’s resolutions to lose weight, and I have a definite opinion, given we’re about to turn a calendar page very soon.

I have always written, taught and said, “many people think that they have to lose weight to be happy; I say get happy and you’ll lose weight.”

I know that as a people, as a culture, we’re not so happy – we depend on external things to provide happiness, such as a nice home, great car, lots of tasty food, money and possessions.  Further, we often look to others for our emotional and material support – and often, relationships fall short of our needs and expectations.

Is happiness dependent on where we live?  Yes, say some academics in a recent study by Andrew J. Oswald, of the University of Warwick in Britain, and Stephen Wu, of Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y. published in Science Magazine.    Also, a recent article in the New York Times.  I say no, happiness doesn’t depend entirely on a sunny climate, or fantastic house, or friends, although those are important.

What then, is happiness about, and how do you get it?

It’s simple: true, lasting happiness is knowing who you are (a child of God, or your Higher Power) and connecting with God in everything you do.  Thinking of God in your work, play, and in every aspect of your life will cause you to be aligned with Spirit, and will bring peace of mind, abundant joy, and authentic happiness.  In other words, letting God guide you in everything will bring you exactly what you need to thrive and fully participate in the wonderful life that you’ve been graced-with.  Taking care of yourself, as a child of God, follows.

How do YOU experience happiness?  What’s your secret to living a life of joy, purpose and lasting health?  PLEASE COMMENT!
