It’s almost summer and we are on the run with vacations, weekend retreats, parties and even relaxing “stay-cations” at home. While it’s tempting to lower the boundaries and let temptations rule — why deal with a lot of post-party guilt and excess pounds, which are never fun?

With health and ultimate happiness in mind, here are some tips for better snacks on the beach, on the road, and in the backyard:

— avoid carbohydrates. Have protein on lettuce leaves, endive, in a salad, or by itself. Or try a protein bar, instead of a candy bar.

— grill or roast vegetables lightly spritzed with olive oil. Pack them in a container for quick snacks.

— try frozen yogurt instead of ice-cream.

— snack on humus and whole wheat pita, instead of candy bars. You’ll get a longer lasting burst of energy that way.

— always have portable fruits on hand: apples, oranges, a little box of raisins.

— try nuts instead of chips. Crunchy, full of protein and vitamins!

— Don’t be intimidated by convenience stores, and the truly unhealthy packaged foods they sell. Often, there are bananas, or fruit available. Or a nice cup of tea or coffee. Or a small bag of nuts.
