I realized today, while making a big bowl of salad for my lunch, that I have salad pretty much every day at midday. I then began to think breakfast. I tend to have some sort of whole grain muffin or cereal first thing in the morning. Then, I began to become aware that I have a food routine going. When it comes to dinner, I also have a regular pattern of protein, and two vegetables.
When people ask me how I lost weight, among other things I mention (God first, then handling difficult emotions without resorting to food, daily playful recreation, etc.) I do like to say that I got into a regular healthy eating habit, instead of dieting.
Having a regular eating routine is not the slightest bit boring; on the contrary, I make variations with each meal and snack. First and foremost, I go for flavor, and really follow my cravings and intuitions. I let my body tell me what nutrients I need.
With this regular eating routine, I’m very aware of when I go off it. I know it when I’m not eating my regular food groups, and when. It’s crystal clear when I am having way too many carbohydrates. It’s starkly evident when I’m having way too much protein or fat. Most of all, being a recovered sugar overeater, I’m now painfully conscious of too much sugar.
I just don’t feel good if I’m off the routine. I put on excess pounds when I am off my eating plan for more than a meal or two, and that always gets me praying to God for help to get back to my routine.
