The overused statement, “Spiritual, not religious,” is an attitude just as susceptible to lead to self-indulgence and a superiority complex as institutional religion.
I figure, the conflict between the spiritual and the religious is similar to a married couple getting upset because both thought the other was going to take out the garbage. In other words, the conflict is a misunderstanding. Spirituality and religion aren’t the problem when they are employed to deepen an understanding of life and love or social engagement.
When I use religion and spirituality as a means to focus on other people’s shortcomings as evidence that they need religion or spirituality, fear and superiority expose themselves in my mindset. look offended, not because of other people but because of the fear and superiority.
However, when I use religion and spirituality as a means to focus on other people’s gifts and talents as opportunities for them to serve others in service to God, wow, life is much better.
I enjoy attending church services, and I meet with the local Drummer’s Circle. Both units of people are welcoming, engaging love and healing, with attitudes that are making great effort not to make a mountain out of a mole-hill when it comes to spirituality and religion.
