The revision of Science and Health occurred when our daughters were in college. The research and study required on my part was never uninteresting and was always rewarding. There were times when I felt overwhelmed, but a healing would occur, or an epiphany would come, or an inspired person would be met to help me, and the overwhelmed feeling would fade.

Apparently, religious teachings can develop a spiritual perspective, however spiritual teachings allow fora broader deeper interpretation which in turn allows for spiritual growth. The intent of 21st Century Science and Health is to extend to the widest magnitude the multidimensional spiritual interpretation of Eddy’s Science and Health. The intent is also to encourage contemplation and dialogue that recognizes similarities in spiritual teachings and the teachings of other religions.

At one point during the revision work, I asked The Christian Science Publishing Society, in Boston, Massachusetts, for assistance in the publication of the revision. But, the Christian Science Board of Directors self-summoned themselves to question me. Our correspondence exposed a lack of intellectual culture. The Board unanimously refused to lift a finger to advance Eddy’s teachings of divine Science through a revision of Science and Health. Apparently, the Board’s personal interpretation of Eddy’s writings juxtaposed with a pious fear and disapproval of a revision. I concluded their rigid myopic interpretation worked against the purpose to advance divine Science into the 21st century. Therefore, I withdrew my church membership to separate myself from that  backward mental milieu. I will admit here that I periodically began struggling with moments of loneliness, however the loneliness would be replaced with love as I determinedly steered away from the influence of personal attachment or animosity and continued to move forward with what I was inspired to do.

Through a tremendous amount of hard work, while being jeered by a minority, a revisionist’s path has been cleared for Science and Health. How long it will be before First Church of Christ, Scientist, enters the path is irrelevant next to the attitude. Is the attitude grafted onto the assumption that no one else is capable of revising Science and Health?

After our daughters graduated from college, Doug and I decided to sell the orchard. It sold in 5 days. We then decided to do what my dad did 50 years back, only in reverse. Move east, to upstate New York. So, we sold everything, bought a couple of used motorcycles and drove across the United States on Highway 2. We’ve been living in upstate New York for 3 years now.
