Here’s the latest from the crossroads of faith, media & culture: 06/03/22
It is about a woman who dies in a plane crash and is taken to a place in the clouds called In-Between. A place where people who die suddenly or go into a coma can say properly farewell to their life. The people who are in a coma, get to choose if they want to wake up again or continue on their soul’s journey. Eva, the main character, is presented with the most difficult choice a parent can make. Will she go back and continue her life with her five-year-old son, or does she believe that she is a part of a Ring of seven people that are meant to gather and bring a higher awareness back to Earth? The In-Between series is about the choices we make that define our life, about trusting yourself and listening to your heart.
JWK: Can you tell me a bit about your personal journey and what inspired you to write the books?
SC: I started my career in television, where I worked as a director in the sports department and worked on big shows like the Olympic games and the Tour de France cycling race. I was talented and the CEO of the national TV station once said to me that he believed that I would become his successor. But I could feel that it was my ego and ambition that were driving me to work there. I was successful but not happy. I felt lonely when I had time off and felt that a part of me was missing.
So, I decided to quit without knowing what to do next. I met a man who worked with feng shui and it caught my interest. Together we created a company teaching the ancient wisdom but with a new perspective focusing on personal growth. It was a huge success, and I wrote two books that became bestsellers. Somehow it opened my view of the world. Like I had been wearing blinders and not seeing the whole perspective of the universe. That was the beginning of a ten-year journey of reconnecting with my essence and heart.
After six years of working with Neo Feng Shui, I felt that it was time to move on and start to work even deeper with personal growth. I sold my share of the business and went to a big meditation resort in India, to teach Neo Feng Shui one last time. I was sitting on the plane home when my body started to shake, and a cold sensation ran down my spine. In (front) of me appeared what seemed like a huge movie screen and I saw glimpses of a story taking place in the clouds, a plane crash and some of the main characters. It properly took ten to fifteen seconds, then it all disappeared again and the shivering also went away. At that moment, I knew that this was the story I was going to write and share with the world.
JWK: Did you set out to write a trilogy?
SC: Yes, I knew it was at least going to be three books. But I didn’t know how the story would unfold or end.
JWK: What sort of reaction have you received?
SC: Many people have written to me and told me that the books touched their hearts. But also that they now appreciate time with their loved ones more and value the small things in life. One woman wrote that she sat down with her boy and, for the first time, she truly took in his scent and felt his energy. Another woman told me how she underlined so many parts she wanted to remember. There was also a man who to wrote me and said that he set his alarm 30 minutes earlier in the morning so that he had time to read before work. I am deeply touched by all the beautiful messages I have had.
JWK: What do you hope people take from it? Is there a philosophy you want to convey?
SC: I hope people start to be more present and stop taking life for granted. Way too many people work hard and are not aware of what truly makes them happy. I hope the books can be a loving reminder to follow your dreams and begin to prioritize what makes you truly happy. And if you are not sure what brings your life purpose, then begin to look for it before it is too late.
JWK: Did you yourself learn anything while writing the trilogy?
SC: I learned to be patient and to let go of control. I’m a fast mover and love to get things done. But, with these books, I learned to follow the rhythm of the universe. I couldn’t force the writing or the story and, even though I thought I was ready to publish The Life many years ago, there were things I needed to learn before it was possible. And now all three books are ready.
JWK: Why is this story relevant now?
SC: Fear is spreading around the world a lot faster than trust and love. I believe it’s important to begin to focus more on how we can help each other instead of how each one of us can survive and gain more from the material world. For many people, it is hard to keep focus and stay present and, when we are not present, we lose the ability to have deep and meaningful conversations.
Many people live in fear, have low self-esteem, are disconnected from themself and feel inner pain. We have to raise awareness so we can begin to live from trust instead of fear. It is easy to talk about it but much harder to do it and in the books there are also tools to work with your personal development.
JWK: Is the story over – or can there be a part four?
SC: There is an opening to a fourth book and, who knows, also a fifth. Time will tell if it is meant to be.
JWK: Are there any particular books and/or authors who have inspired you as a writer?
SC: To be honest, I have never myself been a big reader, until audiobooks became available. So I have found my inspiration in television series. And when I wrote The Life, I was very inspired by the way the series 24 managed to end each episode so it was nearly impossible not to continue watching. I also listen and observe a lot when I watch movies and series.
JWK: Would you like to see a movie or TV show produced from the books? If so, who would you like to see involved?
SC: YES, I would love to see it made into a movie or television series. It has great potential. I would love James Cameron to direct it and Alice Braga to play the main character.
JWK: What’s next for you?
SC: Now I will do my best to bring the books out to the readers. Books are like children. You need to take care of them and support them until they are ready to live their own life. So, I will support the books and help them bring love and light to the world.
