Here’s the latest from the crossroads of faith and media: 10/16/20

Here’s something that didn’t come up in either town hall last light. The Economist just updated the human rights abuses being conducted against the Uyghurs by the Chinese government. Rules on family size are reportedly (though not by most of the globalist media) ruthlessly enforced against Uyghurs. Some women have been forcibly sterilized. When Uyghurs are locked up by the state, their children are reportedly sent to state boarding schools where they can be punished for using their own language and primary schools in East Turkistan (a.k.a. Xinjiang) are being converted into boarding schools for children whose parents are being detained. By one estimate, 880,500 children had been placed in them by the end of 2019. Dissident Salih Hudayar, who was elected as the Prime Minister of the East Turkistan Government-in-Exile in 2019, spoke about the situation on Eric Metaxas’ radio show earlier this year.

“As the home for the Gilmore Girls on television, we look forward to the GilMORE the Merrier binge-a-thon Thanksgiving week tradition each year,” says Hector Campos, vice president content strategy & acquisitions for UPtv. “UPtv is a movie destination year-round, so as we celebrate the 5th year of GilMORE the Merrier and 20th anniversary of the show’s debut, we are thrilled to make this year’s ultimate fan experience bigger than ever with the addition of the Gilmore Girls: Year in the Life movies to our holiday offering.”

Since the first year of GilMORE the Merrier, the hashtag #GilmoreTheMerrier has trended in the U.S. and has received over 1.1 billion impressions on Twitter. In 2019, 4.2 million viewers tuned into of UPtv’s GilMORE the Merrier binge-a-thon. The stunt continued setting records in its fourth installment by delivering UPtv’s highest rated week of the year among women from 18 to 54. The marathon has previously been hosted by Scott Patterson (“Luke”), Yanic Truesdale (‘Michel”) and Sean Gunn (“Kirk”).

Gilmore Girls, which aired from 2000-2007, is set in the storybook Connecticut town of Stars Hollow populated by an eclectic mix of dreamers, artists and everyday folk. The series stars Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel in the title roles. The multi-generational drama about family and friendship centers on Lorelai Gilmore (Graham) and her daughter, Rory (Bledel). Lorelai owns the town’s bed-and-breakfast, the Dragonfly Inn, with best friend/chef Sookie (Melissa McCarthy), and has weekly dinners with eccentric, well-off parents Richard (Edward Herrmann) and Emily Gilmore (Kelly Bishop) who always have something to say about their daughter’s life. The series was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel).

Gilmore Girls: Year in the Life is set nearly a decade after the finale of the original series. The revival follows Lorelai, Rory and Emily Gilmore through four seasons of change. The four Gilmore Girls: Year in the Life movies will begin airing Sunday 11/29 at 11:00 AM (ET).
