Here’s this week’s dispatch from the crossroads of faith and culture:
You gotta hear this.
Don Arbor‘s powerful new music video Everyone Comes from Somewhere celebrated immigration while honoring the singer-songwriter’s own immigrant roots. The track also includes performances from musical luminaries like Barbara Higbie (of Windham Hill fame) and Stef Burns, lead guitarist with Huey Lewis and the News. Arbor was inspired to write the to counter what he sees as a disturbing tide of anti-immigrant sentiment.
With an assist from Bay Area filmmakers Charles Koppelman and Irene Young, Everyone Comes from Somewhere interweaves a tapestry of images that portray America’s immigrant past and present. Bravo!
New York’s Sheen Center celebrates Black History Month
The Catholic cultural center located at 18 Bleecker Street in Manhattan is celebrating African-American history with presentations honoring authors and poets Sapphire, Major Jackson, and Patrick Phillips and baseball trailblazer Jackie Robinson through the eyes of 42 Faith: The Rest of the Jackie Robinson Story author Ed Henry). Also, there’s a reading of the upcoming play Little Rock featuring a discussion with the playwright Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj and Carlotta Walls LaNier, one of the Little Rock Nine.
New York’s New Radio Team
77 WABC Radio just launched a new midday talk show pairing my old Fox News friend Rita Cosby and WABC legend Curtis Sliwa. Rita, of course, is an Emmy-winning journalist and bestselling author (Quiet Hero: Secrets from My Father’s Past). Curtis, you may also know, as the founder of the crime-fighting group the Guardian Angels. Curtis + Cosby airs from 12-3 PM pm on 77 WABC Radio in New York City.
Curtis is entering his fourth year holding down the midday slot while Cosby continues as 77 WABC Political Editor and continues to host The Rita Cosby Show on Sunday mornings.
Curtis notes “This is an actual first in a large radio market. Two Polish Americans who are teamed together. Rita has reported from throughout the world and has made solid contacts with newsmakers and cultural figures that she has brought to the microphones of 77 WABC. And in this age of “ME TOO”, she brings a female voice to our talk radio industry that has been sorely missed.”
