This morning I woke up before the alarm went off. The final massive and laborious edits on a manuscript were calling. (Now I know why so many authors use the expression, “work of love,” to describe their finished product.) As I plow through them this morning, I’ve got singer and songwriter Guy Clark’s “Magdalene” still ringing in my ears: Clark’s album, Workbench Songs, accompanied me on a long day of itinerant chaplain visits this week, and it’s for all restless souls out there looking for the “More” they still haven’t found.

I first heard singer and songwriter Clark perform at Princeton’s McCarter Theater back in my seminary days. “Magdalene” is an appeal to the wanderlust in all of us: Move with me, Magdalene. I’m tired of the same ol’ scene…There’s a Greyhound leaving at midnight, if you came with me it’d be like a dream…Don’t forget your passport, Magdalene.

Here’s to the journey with the hope that we never settle for “the same ol’ scene”:
