Popular voice-over actress Janet Waldor passed away June 12th at the age of 96. She was best known for voicing Judy Jetson on the animated TV series “The Jetsons.” Lucy Lee, Waldo’s daughter, confirmed her mother’s passing to ABC news. Waldo was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor five years ago that was inoperable.
Janet Waldo was born in Washington in 1920. Her first acting role was in the 1938 film “Cocoanut Grove.” Soon after she did plenty of work in radio, where she broke through as the title character on “Miss Corliss Archer,” a CBS radio show about a girl next door. In 1952 Waldo appeared on an episode of “I Love Lucy” and continued to make cameos in other big-hit shows, including “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Get Smart.”
In 1962 the actress stepped into her most famous role as teenager Judy Jetson on the animated series “The Jetsons.” The show aired from 1962 to 1963 and then returned for two more season in 1985 to 1987. She voiced Judy Jetson in the spin off movie “Rockin’ with Judy Jetson.” Waldo played the character until she was 70 years old.
Beyond the cartoon series, Waldo voiced a number of other characters including Josie in “Josie and the Pussycats,” Penelope Pitstop in “Wacky Races,” and Morticia Addams on “The Addams Family.” She can also be heard voicing characters in “The Flinstones” and “Alvin & the Chipmunks.”
Waldo was married to writer and director Robert E. Lee from 1948 until his death in 1994. They had two children together, Lucy Lee and Jonathan Barlow Lee.
