The original ‘James Bond’ actor is remembered for his incredible work as one of the true greats of cinema.
The Scottish actor’s career spanned five decades. He even won an Oscar in 1988 for his role in The Untouchables.
Other notable films included The Hunt for Red October, Highlander, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and The Rock.
What some don’t know about Connery is his faith background. His mother was a Protestant, likely a member of the Church of Scotland, Hollowverse reports. His father was Catholic, and Connery was raised in the faith.
While religion, faith, and spirituality aren’t topics that Connery discussed frequently or in-depth, many could see his faith manifested in how he lived his life and some of the roles he played.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade had many Christian undertones, with some seeing the film as a representation of good versus evil, Christ versus Satan.
“Indy represents good, and of course, the Nazi’s represents evil. Indy at first doesn’t believe in Christ, but after experiencing many hardships, he finally takes God into his soul and trusts in his, and with God’s help, he defeats the Nazi menace and saves his father thanks to the Holy cup’s awesome power,” Christian Spotlight movie reviewer Daniel Ball said.
“‘You must believe boy, you must.’ are the words uttered by Jones, Sr. in the movie. And that is the message of this film. Good vs. Evil. Christ vs. Satan,” he continued.
Connery is cast as Indy’s father in the film, and nobody could have played this role quite like him. His faith background may have drawn him to this role and many others.
He died peacefully in his sleep, having been “unwell for some time,” the BBC reports.
Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said they were “devastated by the news.”
“He was and shall always be remembered as the original James Bond whose indelible entrance into cinema history began when he announced those unforgettable words — ‘The name’s Bond… James Bond,’” they said in a released statement.
Connery starred in his famous Bond Role seven times, beginning with “Dr. No” in 1962. For many years, he was simply known as Bond, as he was the first actor to play the character on the big screen.
Connery left big shoes to fill for every actor who would follow in this role. His portrayal defined the secret agent genre, and his legacy will continue long after his passing. He was 90.
