Rush Limbaugh, who considered himself a spokesperson for America’s religious right, died at the age of 70 to advanced lung cancer.
He was known for his big voice on conservative talk radio. Since its nationally syndicated premiere in 1988, The Rush Limbaugh Show became the highest-rated talk radio show in the U.S.
Limbaugh considered himself a Methodist. In the final years of his life, Limbaugh opened up about his personal relationship with Jesus and the role faith played in helping him through his very difficult battle with cancer. Jesus helped him through challenging times.
“I have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ,” Limbaugh said during one of his final programs. “It is of immense value, strength, confidence. That’s why I’m able to remain fully committed to the idea that what is supposed to happen will happen when it’s mean to.”
Limbaugh had been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer last February. This cancer’s nature is aggressive, having a 5-year survival rate of between 1-10 percent and a 1-year survival rate between 15-19 percent.
Limbaugh’s life was not without controversy. He was denounced by his critics as a bigot and called out for statements deemed racist. Some also criticized him for his close relationship with former President Donald Trump. Yet, for the tens of millions of listeners who followed his show, he gave voice to right wing ideology that didn’t have a place anywhere else in pop culture.
“For over 32 years, Rush has cherished you, his loyal audience, and always looked forward to every single show. It is with profound sadness that I must share with you directly that our beloved Rush, my wonderful husband, passed away this morning due to complications from lung cancer,” his wife, Kathryn said.
“As so many of you know, losing a loved one is terribly difficult, even more so when that loved one is larger than life,” she added.
Former President George W. Bush called Limbaugh, a “friend throughout” his two terms as president. He also praised the talk show host for his battle against cancer and hearing loss.
“Rush Limbaugh was an indomitable spirit with a big heart, and he will be missed,” Bush said in a statement.
