Ray Lewis gave a heartfelt speech at his son’s funeral, fondly remembering his child less than two weeks after his tragic death. Wearing all white, the Pro Football Hall of Famer spoke for several minutes at the service inside Calvary Orlando Church in Florida as dozens of mourners listened.
During his speech, the ex-Baltimore Ravens star said, “We will see you again.” Lewis also discussed how he watched his son over the last 28 years, adding, “The referees thought I was crazy running up and down the sideline.”
He continued,“Everybody that’s here in this room today for my son, from the deepest corners of my family’s heart, thank you. My son used to always say to me, ‘Pops, let’s make today a good day.’ And today, now that I finally see my son’s physical body, you will make today a good day,” clasping his hands together and gesturing toward the sky.
Lewis’ good friend, Michael Irvin, also attended the funeral. On Instagram, Irvin posted, “NO FATHER should ever have to bury his son! There is NOT anything anyone can say to ease this depth of pain. Just know this, MY BROTHER, we love you, and God has you.” Irvin also shared a video from the funeral, showing a montage featuring clips and pictures of Ray and his son. Afterward, he said his heart bleeds for Ray and his family.
After the ceremony, some of Lewis’ family and closest friends gathered at the repast at Lake Mary Preparatory School, where they posed for a photo. Ray Lewis III died on June 14 at 28 years old. According to police, he accidentally overdosed.
The late Ray took after his dad and played college football for the University of Miami, Coastal Carolina University and Virginia Union University. In October 2021, he signed with the Wyoming Mustangs professional indoor football team to play cornerback and safety. In the wake of his passing, the Lewis family have been sharing tributes on social media, with Rahsaan calling his brother a “true angel” in a post.
He wrote his Instagram Story, “I pray you’re at peace now because I know how much you was really hurting. Just watch over us all big bruh. Be our guardian. I promise, I’ll make you smile and proud.” Meanwhile, Ray’s sister Diaymon Lewis described him as “my first love” and “the definition of a quintessential brother.”
“To the most genuine and talented person I know, go get your rest baby and I’m glad you’re at peace,” she wrote on her own Instagram Story. “Fly high baby.” Please continue to keep the Lewis family in your prayers.
