Coco Lee, who starred in the 1998 Mandarin version of “Mulan” has passed away at the age of 48. Lee’s sisters, Carol and Nancy, confirmed on social media that the singer attempted suicide over the weekend and passed away in the hospital on Wednesday.
“With great sadness, we are here [to] break the most devastating news: CoCo had been suffering from depression for a few years but her condition deteriorated drastically over the last few months. Although, CoCo sought professional help and did her best to fight depression, sadly that demon inside of her took the better of her,” her sisters wrote in an Instagram post. “As a family of CoCo, we are very grateful and honored to have such an excellent and outstanding sister. We are thankful to God for giving us such a kind angel. We know now she has gone to a happier place and no longer suffers from depression; we trust God has her best interest looked after!”

Lee is well known for her role in the Mandarin version of “Mulan” along with singing the song “Reflections” in the film. She is also credited for songs on the soundtracks of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “Runaway Bride.” Lee was born in Hong Kong in 1975 before moving to San Francisco with her family as a child. She attended U.C. Irvine before getting her break in the Chinese music industry in the 1990’s.
Lee married Canadian businessman, Bruce Rockowitz, in October 2011 in Hong Kong where the wedding had performances from Bruno Mars, Alicia Keys and Ne-Yo. She was the step-mother to Rockowitz’s two daughters, Rachel and Sarah.
Lee’s sisters ended the Instagram post asking her fans to “share her bright smile, treat people with sincerity, and convey kindness and love to everyone around us, and continue CoCo’s wish to let everyone around feel her love and happiness.” They added, “Although CoCo stays in the world for not long a time, her rays of light will last forever!”
