Guy Rivera, 34, was recently charged with murder and gun possession after he fatally shot NYPD officer, Jonathan Diller, in a traffic stop. The ex-con, who was wounded in the exchange, was arraigned via video from the hospital on charges of murder of a police officer, attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

Rivera was the passenger in a car that was idling at a bus stop when Diller approached the car and was fatally shot. According to police sources, Diller and two other cops were questioning another man in an unrelated incident when they saw Rivera walking “suspiciously” back to a car at the bus stop. When Diller and NYPD Sgt. Sasha Rosen approached the car and began questioning Rivera, he allegedly opened fire, striking Diller in the stomach under his bulletproof vest. Rivera and Rosen then got into a struggle where Rivera allegedly fired off at least one more round, trying to shoot Rosen. The officers returned fire, injuring Rivera as well. Diller was rushed to Jamaica Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the vehicle, Lindy Jones, was also arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon.

Jonathan Diller will be remembered as a hero, who leaves behind his wife and 1-year-old son, after he gave the ultimate sacrifice. “Police Officer Diller was a father, husband and son simply doing his job to serve and protect,” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a statement. “He was killed for it. As alleged, the defendant opened fire and took the officer’s life and tried to shoot another member of the NYPD,” Katz said. “We will not rest until we have achieved justice for Officer Diller, his family and his brothers and sisters in the NYPD who put their lives on the line to protect us.”

Diller’s funeral was held on Saturday where he was honored by his fellow NYPD officers. “Our pouring of grief for this young man is real, and it is raw,” Mayor Eric Adams, a retired New York Police Department captain, said during Diller’s packed funeral service at Saint Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Massapequa, Long Island. “When you see the photos of him with his wife and young son, our hearts break.” “He loved this work and he was darn good at it,” said NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban during the funeral. “He went toward the danger, he put himself in harm’s way, and he did it so that other New Yorkers wouldn’t have to.” Diller’s wife, Stephanie, said that Diller was her soulmate and always wanted to be a dad. “He loved to make everyone laugh and he had the most infectious personality,” she said during the funeral service. “He wasn’t the type to sugarcoat anything, so I won’t sugarcoat this: This is devastating,” Stephanie Diller said. “It’s a devastating, senseless and tragic loss for so many — our family, our friends and the entire city of New York. It’s a shame that someone who brought so much positivity to the world was given such a negative ending.”
