Later today, I’m driving out to outer Cape Cod for vacation, but first I have a stop to make–in Hyannis.
The fact that just as I’m arriving, the funeral procession carrying Senator Ted Kennedy’s body is leaving is a coincidence. But I feel like the stop elevates my trip, in that through a banal errand, I get to–however tangentially–be part of the solemn ritual of saying goodbye.
A few of my esteemed colleagues put together a beautiful gallery of inspirational Ted Kennedy quotes yesterday, so I’ll share some of them with you now. And then I’ll head east, passing through a moment of history on my way to a little R&R.
“The commitment I seek is not to outworn views but to old values
that will never wear out. Programs may sometimes become obsolete, but
the ideal of fairness always endures. Circumstances may change, but the
work of compassion must continue.” –Democratic National Convention, August 1980
“We know the future will outlast all of us, but I believe that all of us will live on in the future we make.” –Accepting an honorary degree from Harvard, December 2008
“The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dreams shall never die.” –Democratic National Convention, August 1980.
