As far as religiosity goes, Barack Obama’s South Carolina victory tonight cut across all lines; he won both among weekly churchgoers and those who seldom or never attend church. But Obama fared best among those who attend church most often. Looking at the exit polls, Obama won 64-percent of South Carolina Democrats who attend church more than once a week, compared to just 23-percent for Hillary Clinton. That’s nearly a three-to-one advantage. Among those who never attend church, meanwhile, Obama won just 38-percent, compared to 31-percent for Clinton. Obama may have granted a lot of interviews to religious outlets like Beliefnet last week to combat those false rumors about him being Muslim, but it wound up doing a lot more than that, giving him a big advantage among faith voters.
