When you’re an indie band playing a major music festival, you have to do something to stand out in the crowd of well-known Christian artists. The Dig Project came up with a unique way to capture the crowd’s attention when they played at Sonshine Festival in Willmar, MN in July: they gave away a guitar.
Well, they didn’t just give it away, they threw it out into the audience during the show.
“We knew we were going to be sharing the stage with some heavy wieghts and wanted to do something that would seperate us from the pack,” says front man Dan Kulp. “We also got very jazzed by the idea that a kid could walk away from our show with something that special. We don’t think a guitar has ever been given out in that manner before. It’s just a great way to love our audience.”
The whole “love our audience” isn’t just spin. The Dig Project is one of those bands that really get into interacting with fans. They’ve been known to invite anyone who wants to join them onstage – I once watched the stage fill with people in wheelchairs when the band performed at a benefit.
They play with kids, act silly and generally make sure that their fans walk away having a great time. Why? Because kids who like hanging out with you are more likely to listen to you when you tell them about Jesus.
