Seventeen-year-old Zach Hunter is an abolitionist and author with an already long history of reaching out to the needy. At just 12 years old, he launched the “Be The Change” campaign to get students involved in ending slavery. Through that, he raised thousands of dollars just by encouraging students to donate loose change. He’s an international speaker and also the author of three books: Be The Change, Generation Change, and his latest, Lose Your Cool: Discovering a Passion that Changes You and the World. In this short video, Hunter shares with Beliefnet why Keith Green is his hero.I can see why Keith Green is one of Zach Hunter’s heroes. As an abolitionist, Zach and Keith share a mission to be the hands and feet of Jesus, loving people the way He would, despite the consequences. Here’s a little background on Keith Green:In 1975, Keith Green and his wife named Melody bought and rented several homes in their suburban L.A. neighborhood and began providing housing and care for prostitutes, drug addicts, the homeless, and anyone else who wanted to her about Jesus – much to the consternation of their more conservative neighbors. In 1977, they officially formed the ministry, Last Days Ministries. The ministry eventually moved to 140 acres in Texas. Green was famous not only for his music and outreach to anyone who needed a helping hand, but for figuratively thumbing his nose at the music industry with his “whatever you can afford” policy. It was his desire that anyone who wanted to hear the gospel – whether it was in his magazine, Last Days Magazine, or on his albums shouldn’t be denied for lack of funds. It wasn’t a decision his label liked, but Green was more concerned with sharing Jesus than making money.Keith Green died on July 28, 1982, when the Cessna 414 leased by Last Days Ministries crashed after takeoff from the private airstrip located on the LDM property. The small two-engine plane was carrying eleven passengers and the pilot, Don Burmeister, for an aerial tour of the LDM property and the surrounding area. Green and two of his children, three year old Josiah, and two year old Bethany, were also on board the plane, along with visiting missionaries John and Dede Smalley and their six children.Melody Green carries on the ministry of Last Days Ministry.
