Last night the 2010 Dove Awards were handed out, which means it’s also time for The Timmy Awards.Somewhere in a coffee shop in Nashville, a secret group on Christian music industry insiders meet to recognize the worst in Christian music. Just for the record: I am not part of the group and I didn’t vote on the winners. But I’m more than happy to share the list!So here they are: The 2010 Timmy Awards – remember that by”best” they mean “worst”:The Timmy Awards Mission Statement – The Timmy Awards, frequently called the Timmies, were created by a small group of Christian music insiders in 2007, intended to counterpoint the Gospel Music Awards by dishonoring (or honoring) the worst album, artist, song, art, etc. that the Christian music industry has to offer. The term Timmy refers to the Precious Moments’ “Timmy the Angel” doll. Easily the awards can be compared to the Razzies, which dishonor the worst films and performances of the year the day prior to the Oscars.Current awards are voted upon by a secret group of industry insiders. Traditionally, nominations are announced privately in March and awarded the day before the Gospel Music Awards (aka Dove Awards) at a coffee shop in downtown Nashville in a private ceremony. The 2010 Timmy AwardsBest Coming OutJennifer Knapp Gospel Soundcheck post: Jennifer Knapp is “out of the closet” and back with a new albumBest Self-Serving Event of the YearGospel Music Association hosting a $1,000 a plate dinner to raise fundsGMA press releaseRelated posts on the Gospel Soundcheck blogThe Leon Patillo Award (commemorating Leon Patillo’s RV exploding and burning on tour)Addison Road Best CCM AwardThe Greatest Rock Singer of all Time – John Schlitt – Named by the Gospel Music ChannelBest TourDerek Webb and Jennifer Knapp Best Wet and Wild AwardProphetess Taketa Williams Best New Artist Name (tie)Benjah on Goodtree Records Jupiter Wind Best ActressRebecca St. James for her work in Sarah’s Choice Best ActorCarman for his work in Book of Ruth Best Album Cover (tie)Charmaine Best AlbumCharmaine Best New Christian CompanyPURE FLIX (christian knock-off of Netflix) Best MovieHolyman Undercover Best Song (tie)Hacker’s Prayer by Eric Champion The Butcher by Project 86Best New Christian ProductPeter Furler Introduces Painted Drum HeadsBest Church ChoirSenior Adult Choir does Urban Music, including the hit “Ridin Dirty” RELATED POSTS:Gospel Music Association rumors and problems; where does GMA go from here?Jennifer Knapp is “out of the closet” and back with a new albumPart 1 Of My Interview with Derek Webb; Talking About Controversy and Record SalesPart 2 Of My Interview with Derek Webb: Cursing In Songs, HomosexualityThe 2009 Timmy Awards
