Earth Day (April 22) is a great excuse to give back to Mother Earth for all the other days when we’re taking advantage of her. But it’s not just about toting a cute reusable grocery bag, getting rid of the one-time use plastic water bottle or changing your light bulbs. There are actually things you can do for the earth that can directly benefit you too. Here are a few things you can try this weekend in celebration of earth, nature and you.
1. Spend Time Outdoors
Why it’s good for you: Celebrate Earth Day by forgoing your laptop for the outdoors. Your body and mind will thank you. A few research studies {mentioned here} have shown that being in nature may actually reduce stress, depression and ADHD symptoms. The sun offers much needed vitamin D and exercising has its own physical and psychological benefits.
Why it’s good for the earth: Whether you’re planting a garden or just enjoying the scenic view, time spent reveling in your surroundings will increase not only your enjoyment of it, but your desire to protect it.
2. Go to Your Local Farmer’s Market
Why it’s good for you: There is now enough research to prove that you really are what you eat. Incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet can go a long way in improving your physical and mental health. And since farmer’s markets offer more affordable, healthy options, it may better for your wallet too.
Why it’s good for the earth: It’s debatable whether farmer’s markets really do cut down on carbon footprint because of all that traveling between customers and local vendors. But interacting with and supporting local farmers can be a first step in increasing awareness of local agriculture, which in turn could one day fuel greater change in public policy.
Finish Up Your Spring Cleaning
Why it’s good for you: Getting rid of stuff you no longer use or need can feel invigorating. It’s a purge of what you don’t need so that you will have room for what you do. This is the time to part with gifts from old boyfriends, books you never read, clothes that still have tags on them. When you say goodbye to the things that are mindlessly filling up your home, you invite positive change in your life.
Why it’s good for the earth: Recycling and donating old and used stuff are a great way to keep items in rotation and out of the landfill.
Hope you have a Happy Earth Day! And let me know how you are going to celebrate.
