sunset-2068593_960_720Darkness imprisons us in fear. Love liberates us from this tunnel of despair.

In the tunnel, the world makes no sense, and we are brought to a place we would do anything to avoid. Yet, the tunnel is there, it lies relentlessly in our consciousness like a noose held tightly around our neck. We feel strangled by fear and loss.
In the strangulation, it feels like one cannot breathe – one has nowhere to go but to vanish and be swallowed up into the earth’s abyss.

Maybe the tunnel does matter?

Suppression is not the answer to the darkness. Perhaps the tunnel is all about our soul’s expression and personal transformation, our yearning to fully know ourselves, and to unfold completely in our wholeness and truth. In this way, it is valuable as part of the journey of the soul.

Perhaps it is merely growing pains, our souls trajectory moving forward via firstly shedding layers.
It’s important to keep our sense of power instead of the powerlessness that is indicative of the tunnel. We are coming to a place we want to be – from a place we would do anything to avoid.
Carl Jung highlights the inevitable avoidance of suffering:
“There is no coming to consciousness without pain. People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own Soul. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.”

Make your darkness consciousness and deal with it. Don’t suppress it. Don’t hide behind behind (or beneath) it, lest it becomes a painful numbness.

In Letters to a Young Poet, Rainer Maria Rilke writes something evocative:
“Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love.”
The vacuum is not the end of the road; it’s part of the whole. There is a new beginning and a new hope, a new light around the corner. Stay present to the breath, our connection to the source of life.
Perhaps the darkness is not something to be resisted, denied, or avoided. Perhaps what frightens us most is our own light.
