1. Fear Not
Fear, hysteria, panic and anxiety only serve to weaken our bodies. Our immune system responds to fear and the type of biochemical stress hormones our bodies produce (Adrenaline, Cortisol, Norepinephrine) with suppression. It is actually fear that makes us more susceptible to illnesses like Coronavirus.
Fear imitates an orchestra of chemicals and responses starting at the amygdala (a release of glutamate) and initiating the hypothalamus fight or flight response.
Glutamate in excess leads to:
- anxiety, restlessness and inability to focus
- amplification of pain
2. Avoid the Media Cycle
Whether the media is hyping this up to serve an agenda or not, calling it a pandemic, stopping business and spreading panic across the globe, is not a recipe for wellness or wellbeing. A member of the Australian government announced today that it’s a likely scenario that schools will be shut down until things calm down.
Avoid news commentary where possible. Take a time out for your sanity!
If in doubt, ask a friend or confidante to keep you informed of any really important breaking news stories. Generally the news reported is neither relevant nor helpful to the actual quality of your life or survival chances.
3. If 65+, please do take this as seriously as you would the winter flu
Most of the reported deaths are in this age-category.
It is unusual to die from coronavirus (or the flu), unless you are immunocompromised as is more common amongst the elderly and children.
4. Get your facts straight! Take this in the proper context
The New England Journal of Medicine reports as follows:
….the currently reported case fatality rate is approximately 2%. In another article … mortality of 1.4% among 1,099 patients with laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 … the overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza … rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS…”
The CDC study found an annual average of 300,000 to 650,000 deaths worldwide from a flu season.
So far, worldwide over 4,000 people have died from the coronavirus. It is being taken extremely out of context by authorities. In the context of annual flu deaths, it is not a pandemic.
5. Breathe!
Please breathe soundly from the abdomen – deeply knowing that the world is transient and ever-changing. All things will pass, and nature will keep an equilibrium. The parasympathetic nervous system is activated by deep breathing, and this both restores and rejuvenates immune function.
6. Keep calm
Mindfulness is an approach where we as conscious beings become aware of our feeling-responses to the world. One method is by naming our emotions as we experience them. This fires up the thinking part of the brain.
7. Rest and take time out
This way you will be sure to rise above fear and suffering.
8. Surrender
It’s important to take personal responsibility for all that appears in life. In this context, make sure to exercise and spend time in nature and sunshine to build your immune strength. Eat healthily (preferably organic foods with a high vegetable and fruit content).
On a deep level, accept all that is happening. We can only control that which we are in control of (and the truth is – that isn’t that much on a collective level – yet it is A LOT on an individual level). We are not in control of all aspects of life.
Surrender to whatever is happening without resistance.
Travel light and be safe,
David
