Grammy-winning Christian music star, Steven Curtis Chapman is battling a heart-breaking personal tragedy today—his 5-year-old daughter Maria Sue was struck and killed by a car in her family’s driveway yesterday.
Chapman, and his wife, adopted Maria Sue, as well as two other daughters, from China, after being persuaded by their oldest daughter. They have since become adoption advocates and set up a foundation to help other families adopt
Marie Sue seems to have been hit by a car driven by one of Chapman’s sons—though the name and age of the son (he has two) is currently unavailable. However, according to witnesses, the driver did not see the child when she was struck.
In a 2005 interview with Beliefnet, Chapman spoke about his Christian mission to bring awareness to adoption.
We believe that by rescuing one orphan or two orphans, or in a church coming together and adopting 10 or 20, the ripple will go out from there and God will multiply it all. It is more about experiencing God and watching him bring his kingdom to bear on our lives in this present moment than it is about saying we’re going to erase the need.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Chapman family. If you’d like to post your condolences, the Chapman’s have set up a blog dedicated to remembering Maria Sue, click here.
