I’ve only barely noticed the media furor over Miss California USA Carrie Prejean’s comments about same sex marriage, but one story yesterday made me groan, even though we all should have seen it coming a mile away: a tabloid website posted photos they obtained of Prejean in a saucy pose wearing only pink underwear. In fact, in a mere twenty-four hours there is already speculation that Prejean may have to give up her crown for violating part of the pageant contract.
Prejean has released a statement, openly proclaimed her Christian faith, saying that the photos were taken when she was only seventeen and they were for a modeling shoot. She also said that the release of the photos were a deliberate attempt to “mock her Christian faith.”
I’m not one to support those in the spotlight who have martyr complexes. She has a point. Really in a long of history of beauty pageant scandals, I think this is a relatively minor one. The photo is tasteful, she is only seen from the back, and though the photo may not show the best judgment, clearly it is a photo from the distant past.
Personally, I am much more worried about the rumor she is dating Olympic swimmer and party boy Michael Phelps. Now that, in my opinion, would be a big mistake.
