Babyface Liam Neeson in his first starring role.

John Bunyan’s classic allegory Pilgrim’s Progress has had a long history of film and television adaptations, including a 1912 silent film, a 1979 live-action film that gave Liam Neeson his first starring role, and numerous animated versions. Unfortunately, they’re all terrible (or terribly outdated). Which means that the field is ripe for an adaptation that is actually watchable.

The good news is that not only is one on the horizon, but it looks like it might be quite good. The Narrow Road stars Anthony Tyler Quinn who has an actor’s resume a mile long and Doug Jones who has appeared in a few small movies like Hellboy and Fantastic Four (read Beliefnet’s exclusive interview with Jones here). You can see some of the film’s gorgeous storyboards by artist Ben Rosa below.

So that’s the good news. The bad news is they need a little help. Producer Eric Yeager has set up a Kickstarter page and  is looking for grassroots investors to get the vision off the ground. As of this writing, they’ve already raised 34% of what they need to shoot a proof-of-concept trailer. However, if the project hasn’t met its goal of $7500 by May 10th it’s lights out for Pilgrim’s Progress.
