Technical difficulties, a rare thunderstorm, and a death of key cast member’s father didn’t stop the success of “Grease: Live” last night, drawing in rave reviews.

Audio glitches interrupted Julianne Hough’s big solo number, “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” and viewers in Atlanta lost connection during the “Hand Jive” number. A Southern California downpour also forced many cast members to carry umbrellas during some of the outdoor scenes, filmed on a Warner Brother’s backlot.

Vanessa Hudgens, who played the tough-talking Rizzo, was applauded for her performance, especially after revealing her father, Greg Hudgens, died of cancer only hours before the show. She tweeted at her fans to say she “was doing the show in his honor.”

Despite the glitches, critics are gushing over the success of “Grease: Live” hosted on Fox. Fans took to social media to express their love of the live TV musical, saying the show is a worthy successor to the classic John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John movie.

The one point of controversy during the show was the family-friendly censorship. Executive Producer Marc Platt addressed the censorship in an interview last week, saying it would be a family-friendly show but with an appropriate edge. Fans were confused about many of Fox’s changes in lyrics from the original movie. With certain words being taken out while others, which many felt were inappropriate, were left in.

The three-hour production wrangled in over 12.2 million views and a 4.3 rating amount adults 18-49. Fox easily took the first-place status on broadcast for the night.

This was Fox’s first live musical, following up from NBC’s last three live musical efforts. Most recently, NBC’s The Wiz, which drew in with 11 million viewers.

The cast included a list of notable stars, including: Julianne Hough (Sandy), Aaron Tveit (Danny Zuko), Vanessa Hudgins (Rizzo), Carly Rae Jepsen (Frenchy), Keke Palmer (Marty), Joe Jonas (Johnny Casino), among many others.
