Cristiano Ronaldo never thought he would tick off Buddhists after posting a picture of himself with his foot resting on a Buddha statue. But he sure did. The Real Madrid star posted the image of Facebook and in less than 10 hours the photo had over one million likes and 40,179 shares on the social media website. He captioned the post “Bom Dia.” A Portuguese word for “good morning.”
The morning was not good for Buddhists who were outraged after viewing Ronaldo dressed casually by the stature with his hands in his pockets, wearing a baseball ball cap turned backwards, wearing sunglasses and sporting sneakers.
The comments started to pour in. “This is disrespectful …. How can he put his leg on Gautam Buddha …. I was not expecting this stupidity from Ronaldo …. Sir today u lost one of ur fan this is very bad,” wrote one fan on Facebook. This was just one of the 63,000 comments listed after the picture was posted on Thursday morning. Another fan posted his response: “This is disrespectful …. How can he put his leg on Gautam Buddha. I was not expecting this stupidity from Ronaldo. Sir today u lost one of ur fan this is very bad,” wrote another.
People are demanding that the 25-year-old soccer player take the picture offline as it is disrespectful to the father of Buddhism. Ronaldo, who has over 200 million followers on social media, still has not responded to the criticism or has taken the image down.
“I think you should delete this posting before people is living Asia angry you, Cristiano Ronaldo. I really love you and don’t want to hear someone blame you. You should know and respect religion of your fans. Thank you so much for your deletion. God bless you,” wrote a follower.
