The Prince and Princess of Wales attended a recent Boston Celtics game, but many team members didn’t seem interested. The Celtics’ head coach doesn’t even consider Prince William and Kate Middleton as “The Royal Family.”
A reporter asked Joe Mazzulla if he met with “the Royal Family.” His response: “Jesus, Mary and Joseph?” He seemed pretty serious, too. “Oh no, I did not. I’m only familiar with one royal family. I don’t know too much about that one,” he continued after a reporter clarified she was talking about the Prince and Princess of Wales.
The couple joined Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck and his wife, Emilia Fazzalari, co-owner Steve Pagliuca and his wife, Judy, Celtics great and Hall of Famer Thomas “Satch” Sanders, and others. They are on their first trip to the United States in almost a decade.
Jaylen Brown hardly even noticed, adding that “it was just a regular game for me.” When the couple was shown on the jumbotron, fans broke into a “USA” chant. Jokesters quickly poked fun at the awkward moment, with one Twitter user writing, “What was the Point of Dumping the Tea in the Harbor if you’re just going to invite the Royals to a Celtics game 249 years later.”
The frosty reception — which ITV NEWS’ royal editor Chris Ship attributed to the Boston team’s “strong Irish roots”— comes after the couple’s trip was already marred by accusations of racism in the royal family.

Shortly before the Prince and Princess of Wales touched down on American soil, William’s godmother Lady Susan Hussey resigned from her honorary position in King Charles’ household after making “unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments” to a black domestic abuse campaigner during a Buckingham Palace event.
The offense occurred at a Palace reception where Hussey, 83, repeatedly asked the non-profit founder Ngozi Fulani, 61, where she came from. Although Prince William avoided commenting on the scandal directly, a spokesperson from Kensington Palace addressed the news at a briefing, saying, “I was really disappointed to hear about the guest’s experience at Buckingham Palace last night.” In addition to the usual charity stops, the couple also rubbed shoulders with President Biden before presenting the Earthshot Prize at a star-studded gala.
The rocky start to the Wales’ Boston visit is also compounded by the release of the trailer for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s upcoming Netflix documentary. Harry and Meghan famously quit their royal duties in January 2020 and moved to California.
The runaway couple then accused the royals of racism during their explosive Oprah interview in 2021. Among the couple’s accusations was that an unnamed “senior royal” questioned the skin color of their then-unborn first child, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.
There were highs and lows for the royal couple on their U.S. trip. Sadly, Prince William and Princess Kate didn’t get the warmest reception on their first U.S. tour in eight years. Hopefully, if they ever decide to come back, they’ll be welcomed back to Boston with open arms and the Celtics’ head coach may recognize them as another royal family.
