Adriel Carrion, who auditioned for “American Idol” three years ago, recently made a TikTok video reminiscing his audition and speaking out about a moment on the show with celebrity judge, Katy Perry, that has left him “haunted” years later.
In the clip, Carrion, who was 18 at the time, was auditioning for season 19 with fellow contestant, Anthony Guzman, where they announced that they had prepared a “sweet” duet saying, “We’re going to do something sweet for you. ” Perry reacted with wide eyes saying, “not ‘Watermelon Sugar.’” Referring to the popular Harry Styles song that the duo had insinuated they were about to sing. “I can’t take another ‘Watermelon Sugar,’” said the “California Gurls” singer. The video shows Carrion’s reaction as his smile disappeared when Perry spoke of her disapproval of the song. The duo still went on with singing their rendition of the Harry Styles song, but were obviously a bit rattled after Perry’s hurtful joke.
In the TikTok video, Carrion ended the video with his present-day self speaking about how that moment has affected him. “It’s the way that it’s been three years, and I’m still traumatized by this moment.” He continued by saying, “I can be getting my beauty rest and all I hear in my nightmares ‘Not ‘Watermelon Sugar.’”
“American Idol” is gearing up for their 21st season with Perry continuing her role as a celebrity judge accompanied by “All Night Long” singer Lionel Richie and country star Luke Bryan. The show is hosted by Ryan Seacrest, who has served as the show’s host since it’s debut on Fox 2002.
