The story of Jesus Christ is one of the most recognized throughout Christianity. From His birth in a manger to His crucifixion and resurrection, Jesus’ story has captivated millions through time, making believers even more grateful for His sacrifice.
Though many people know Jesus’ story, “The Thorn” tells His story in a way many have never seen before. This film started as a stage play for high schoolers but has grown into a phenomenon that visually captivates you while sharing the story of Jesus Christ. John Bolin, executive producer of “The Thorn,” says this experience allows you to “see and experience Jesus in a unique, up close and personal way.”
The film starts with a description of a group of people who spread throughout the world in the first century of the modern age. These people told stories of a man who banished death and illness with one touch and held power over death. The Roman Empire caught word of these stories and decided to quelch them. Some followers were enslaved, while others were sent to die in horrific arena matches.
One man, John, refused to succumb to these punishments and was sent to exile on the island of Patmos. While in exile, John meets a young boy named Asher. Asher starts sharing his story with John, telling him he was forced into slavery for being a thief. John tells Asher that he was exiled for spreading the good news of his master, adding that the Romans tried to beat him, kill him, and boil him in oil.
John calls himself Jesus’ last living disciple and His favorite. From that point, the audience is visually captivated by the performers and how they tell the stories of God creating the earth, Lucifer, Adam and Eve, and Moses. John tells Asher how God’s people lived in peace for thousands of years until the Roman Empire took power. After that, believers started to wonder when the Messiah would save them.
The viewer is introduced to Mary and Joseph using a stunning mix of music, live action, and visuals. Then, the tale goes through Jesus’ life, showcasing His highlights and miracles. Returning to John and Asher, John tells him how he met Jesus while he was with Peter, detailing the story of the 12 disciples and how Jesus fed 5,000 with bread and fish. The story takes a sad turn when John tells Asher about Judas’ betrayal and the Last Supper. From this point, the tale grows intense. It doesn’t directly show Jesus receiving His lashings, but it gets bloody, which may disturb younger viewers.
Finally, John emotionally recounts Jesus’ crucifixion while sharing an encouraging message with Asher. He tells Asher that he’s more than a thief and is loveable. While John shares his point, Roman soldiers come and whisk John away, accusing him of stealing. “The Thorn” may tell the same story that many have heard before, but it does it in a way that makes you feel like you’re hearing it for the first time.
With the music and visuals, this film will bring you to tears as you recount the magnificent story of Jesus Christ. It’s a beautiful film for those who know the story and those who’ve never heard it. The film’s second half might be too intense for younger viewers, so keep that in mind. Still, “The Thorn” is a beautiful film for the entire family to enjoy.
