Andre Jackson, a co-captain and junior guard of the University of Connecticut men’s basketball team, wants to use his platform to lead others to God. According to Sports Spectrum, UConn has earned its fifth national title in the history of the men’s program, causing Jackson’s star to rise.
Jackson led the team with three rebounds, six assists, two steals, and three points. His future on the court was uncertain after an injury to his right pinky finger in October. He missed the first three games but said the incident taught him to trust God. At the time, he told the Journal Inquirer, “I think everything happens for a reason. So I think that this is definitely a message from God to just stay consistent in my work and stay on the same path.”
The basketball star often used his platform to recognize God, even telling reporters he felt a connection between his faith and basketball. He said, “I feel like I’ve went through a lot of trials and tribulations in the past when it comes to basketball. So for Him to present me with a great opportunity like this, I’m really just looking forward to trying to seize it and give all glory to Him, as always.”
Jackson’s perspective is likely the result of his relationship with Clyde Clymer, his longtime trainer who is also a pastor. Over the years, Clymer has become Jackson’s role model and father figure. In March 2022, Jackson told CT Insider, “Clyde is my heart. The three most important things in my life – he is. He is my connection with God, and he’s been my connection with basketball. He was always there for me as a kid when I was going through a lot. Didn’t have too much. He was a great role model.”
Jackson, who uses his Twitter and Instagram accounts to proclaim “All glory to God” and “Jesus loves you,” indicated after the championship win that he plans to return to UConn next season. He said, “Only way I’m not coming back is if coach tells me to leave.”
