Thirteen-year-old Malakai Bayoh recently received the coveted Golden Buzzer during his “Britain’s Got Talent” audition after singing a religious tune. Bayoh blew away the audience and judges with his version of “Pie Jesu.” Simon Cowell gave him the Golden Buzzer, meaning he automatically advanced to the next round.
The teen first entered music through his church at St. George’s Cathedral. He shared, “My mum made me join my local choir when I was 7 years old. And after that, I joined my secondary school, and with that, there came opportunities to do operas, concerts, etc.” He said he hopes to become an opera singer in the future.
Bayoh is not the only young person who has impressed talent show judges with a powerful performance of a religious song. Eleven-year-old Madison Baez Taylor wowed the judges on “America’s Got Talent” and also earned the coveted Golden Buzzer after her stunning performance. While filming the talent show, the audience members get the chance to jump onstage and sing during commercial breaks. Taylor, a contestant who got to trick the judges, went up and sang “Amazing Grace.”
The judges were shocked by her talent. Howie Mandel turned around in his chair to get a better look while Simon Cowell returned from a side room after hearing the 11-year-old’s powerful voice. Cowell said, “We do ask people in the breaks if they’d like to sing a song, and I was literally just coming back in, and I heard this voice, thinking, ‘Who…is that?’ And then I see this little thing in the audience, and it’s you.”
Taylor is a huge fan of the show and dreamt of competing on the show for years. “I’ve been to many tapings, and ever since I was 4 years old, I would always try and sing for the commercial breaks,” the talented youngster said. “And it’s always been my dream to be on the show. And I’m finally here.”
After the judges were let in on the trick, Taylor climbed on stage and sang not one but two verses of the classic hymn. Mandel leaped from his seat and walked to the middle of the judges’ panel, where he rang the Golden Buzzer, sending the pre-teen straight to the live shows.
