Three outspoken Christian singers recently advanced to the next round of “American Idol.” Churchleaders.com reports that Haven Madison, Megan Danielle, and Warren Peay made it to the top eight in the competition. They and the other contestants are competing for a recording contract and a $250,000 prize.
Georgia native Megan Danielle sang “Go Rest High on That Mountain” by Vince Gill to honor her late grandfather or “papa.” Danielle was surprised by Christian songwriter and singer Lauren Daigle, whom Danielle considers an inspiration. The duo sang “You Say” together in front of the judge.
After advancing to the top eight, Danielle took to Instagram to thank her supporters and God. She wrote, “Thank y’all from the bottom of my heart! This was one of my most challenging performances, but what a way to honor my papa! Thank you, God!”
Meanwhile, 17-year-old Madison, the youngest remaining contestant and Idol finalist ever, rose to the top eight after singing Paramore’s “Only Exception.” Her father is Jason Roy, the lead singer of the Grammy-nominated Christian rock band Building 429.
After being voted into the top eight, the Tennessee native wrote on Instagram, “I am speechless! Thank you to everyone who has continued to vote and support my journey on @americanidol. This continued to be the dream of a lifetime, and I could not do it without you cheering me on! I am so grateful. Now rest up! You’ll need your energy to vote for me again next week!”
Peay, who judge Katy Perry dubbed “a Christian Chris Stapleton” during his audition, made it to the top eight after singing “Colder Weather” by Zac Brown Band. Originally from Bamberg, South Carolina, Peay is a worship leader at Colston Branch Baptist Church. Peay said, “I cannot put into words how it feels to be in the Top 8! It means the world to me to know you all have voted me this far into the competition, and I hope I can continue to make you all proud! To God be the glory!”
TV Insider says the other contestants in the top eight are Oliver Steele, Iam Tongi, Colin Stough, Zachariah Smith, and Wé Ani.
