De Niro had been interviewed by King for his upcoming film “About My Father” just days before the announcement of his child, although he did not mention the news of baby Gia in the interview. When King asked De Niro why he held off on announcing the news in that interview, De Niro responded that he didn’t want to take the focus away from the upcoming film that was the subject of the interview. When another reporter directly referenced De Niro’s six children, he didn’t feel comfortable denying the baby’s existence. The actor confirmed to King that the baby was planned, telling her that he and Chen wanted to have a child together.
De Niro’s six children are from three previous relationships. He was married to Diahnne Abbott from 1976 to 1988 where they share daughter Drena, 51, who was adopted by De Niro, and son Raphael, 46. He shares twin sons Julian and Aaron, 27 with Toukie Smith, who he dated from 1988 to 1996. Along with Elliot, 24, and Helen Grace, 11, who he shares with ex-wife Grace Hightower. The two were married from 1997 to 2018.
