Academy Awards

“Oppenheimer” clinched the prestigious title of Best Picture at the 2024 Oscars, held this past Sunday. Throughout the evening, the film secured an impressive seven awards, with Christopher Nolan taking home the Best Director accolade, Cillian Murphy awarded Best Actor, and Robert Downey Jr. honored with Best Supporting Actor. In addition to these triumphs, “Oppenheimer” also claimed victory in categories such as Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Film Editing.

In a surprising turn of events, Emma Stone emerged victorious as Best Actress for her performance in “Poor Things,” a film that also triumphed in three crafts categories, including Best Costume Design, Production Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. Stone’s win came as a surprise to many, as she surpassed perceived frontrunner Lily Gladstone, renowned for her role in “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

Da’Vine Joy Randolph secured the title of Best Supporting Actress for her role in “The Holdovers,” while Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki’s animated masterpiece, “The Boy and the Heron,” claimed the honor of Best Animated Feature. Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” was recognized as the Best International Feature, while the documentary “20 Days in Mariupol” clinched the award for Best Documentary.

The Oscar for Best Original Song was bestowed upon Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell for their composition, “What Was I Made For?” featured in “Barbie.” Justine Triet and Arthur Harari were lauded for their Best Original Screenplay in “Anatomy of a Fall,” while Cord Jefferson earned recognition for Best Adapted Screenplay for “American Fiction.”

Prior to the ceremony, “Oppenheimer” led the pack with an impressive 13 nominations, followed closely by “Poor Things” with 11, “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10, and “Barbie” with eight.

The 96th annual Academy Awards unfolded at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood, broadcasting live on ABC and hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the fourth time.

However, the evening was not without its share of disruptions, as a Free Palestine march advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza caused traffic disruptions in Los Angeles on the day of the 2024 Oscars.
