Scrabble will release a new version of the game that will be more “inclusive” for Gen Z players and “less competitive.” The new double-sided Scrabble board will still feature the original game for those who want to play the traditional version, but on the flip side, the new game will include helper cards, use a simpler scoring system, and be quicker to play. The BBC reported that the new board, Scrabble Together, will also let players compete in teams.

The game’s creator, Mattel, conducted research and found that Gen Zers aren’t as competitive as older generations. Gyles Brandreth of BBC Radio 4’s Today reported, “The makers of Scrabble found that younger people, Gen Z people, don’t quite like the competitive nature of Scrabble. They want a game where you can simply enjoy language, words, being together and having fun creating words.”

Ray Alder, vice president and global head of games at Mattel, said, “Scrabble has truly stood the test of time as one of the most popular board games in history, and we want to ensure the game continues to be inclusive for all players. For anyone who’s ever thought ‘word games aren’t for me’ or felt a little intimidated by the classic game, Scrabble Together mode is an ideal option.”

He continued, “With team-based and faster gameplay, Scrabble Together Mode continues to celebrate the wonder of words just as the Classic version does, but thanks to its exciting new cooperative and dynamic gameplay, it’s more accessible and brings people together. Players who prefer the classic version will continue to have the classic board game.”

“The game speaks to a trend in younger people who want to avoid competitive games, instead favoring teamwork and collaboration working towards a fun goal together,” said Brett Smitheram, the UK’s number one and 2016 World Scrabble Champion.
