Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels made NFL history on Monday night, but instead of reveling in personal accolades, he was quick to give all the credit to God. After leading the Washington Commanders to a thrilling 38-33 upset win over the Cincinnati Bengals, Daniels gave a post-game interview on ESPN where he made it clear who was responsible for his success.

“I can’t do nothing without Him,” Daniels said with humility, following a performance that saw him complete 21 of 23 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for another score, raising the Commanders’ record to 2-1 and shocking a league that had pegged the team as being in a rebuilding year. Daniels’ completion percentage of 91.3 percent set a new record for rookie quarterbacks, further solidifying his place as one of the league’s rising stars.

Despite the buzz surrounding his historic achievement, Daniels redirected all praise to God. “We’re just executing at a high level,” Daniels said before adding, “I give credit to my o-line, give credit to my receivers, my running backs, and most importantly, give credit to God. I wouldn’t be here without Him.”

When told he had set an NFL rookie record, Daniels simply responded, “That’s crazy. Give glory to God. I wouldn’t be in this business without Him. So I can’t do nothing without Him.”

Daniels’ rise to NFL stardom has been rapid, following a standout collegiate career at LSU, where he won the Heisman Trophy and caught the eye of NFL scouts with his pinpoint accuracy and game-changing speed. He was the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and in just three games, he’s proven to be more than ready for the professional stage.

But as much as his talents are on full display, so is his faith. Daniels has made his Christian beliefs a cornerstone of his public persona. After a Week 2 victory over the New York Giants, Daniels took to Instagram to share Proverbs 3:5-6, writing, “‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.'”

This deep-rooted faith has been a constant throughout Daniels’ journey to the NFL. Before being drafted, Daniels penned an article in “The Players’ Tribune” where he reflected on his path to success, writing, “I feel like everything God has put me through has prepared me for a moment like this.”

Daniels’ boldness in sharing his faith has been evident since his college days. When asked what advice he’d give to young people during the Heisman Trophy broadcast, he encouraged them to “always believe in yourself—no matter the doubters, no matter what people say about you, just believe in yourself. Lean on your faith with Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, and just keep working.” Daniels later referred to God as “my Rock, my Savior.”
