Renowned Christian singer-songwriter Lauren Daigle has released a powerful new song, “Then I Will,” as part of the soundtrack for the upcoming film Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Spy, Assassin, set to hit theaters on November 22. The song, now available on streaming platforms, was written to honor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German theologian and anti-Nazi dissident who stood courageously for his faith even to the point of death.

Bonhoeffer’s life has inspired countless believers, and Eric Metaxas’ 2011 biography brought renewed attention to his story. The upcoming film adaptation, produced by Angel Studios—famous for The Chosen—brings Bonhoeffer’s legacy to the big screen, diving into his remarkable journey and his enduring impact on Christian faith and moral courage

“When I read the book Bonhoeffer, I never expected to one day write a song for the film adaptation,” Daigle shared with her fans on X. “I’m thrilled to be part of this project.” The lyrics of Then I Will echo Bonhoeffer’s commitment to God’s will over his own life: “I’ll surrender everything / All for Your will / Abandon every part of me / All for Your will / No matter what the cost will be / If it’s for me to die for love / Then I will.” These words reflect Bonhoeffer’s determination to stand up for justice, even as it cost him his life.

Daigle expressed that she didn’t hesitate when asked to join the project. “Bonhoeffer had unwavering faith, and his commitment to stand up for the vulnerable and speak truth in the face of evil is a challenge to everyone. Are we willing to die for our neighbor?” she said. Daigle’s song serves as a solemn reminder of the power of sacrificial love and the strength found in faith-driven action.

Camille Kampouris, one of the film’s producers, spoke highly of Daigle’s involvement, saying, “We knew she would capture the man and his heart with her music.” Bonhoeffer’s story, as Kampouris describes it, is especially relevant in today’s divided world. Director Todd Komarnicki also emphasized that the film’s message is one of grace rather than judgment, inviting people of all backgrounds to reflect on what it means to act with courage in the face of evil.

Komarnicki explained, “This story is about one man’s stance against evil itself. Bonhoeffer wasn’t fearless—he had doubts, questions, and fears like anyone else. But he was driven to act because he saw the church’s moral duty to stand against the oppression of others.” For Komarnicki, Bonhoeffer is “a film about a Christian” rather than “a Christian film,” similar in scope and approach to the classic Chariots of Fire.

In addition to its historical and spiritual significance, Bonhoeffer prompts today’s believers to ask difficult questions about their own faith and convictions. “Bonhoeffer’s message challenges us to think about who we are, what we stand for, and what it means to live by grace rather than judgment,” Komarnicki shared.

Through Then I Will, Lauren Daigle honors the legacy of a man who exemplified the highest ideals of faith. Bonhoeffer’s life reminds us that faith often requires immense courage and sacrifice.
