In preparation for the highly anticipated movie release of the popular Broadway play, “Wicked,” retailers began selling “Wicked” themed dolls of the main characters. Those dolls, however, were quickly pulled after a terrible printing mistake was discovered on the packaging. The film features Cythina Erivo as Elphaba, the infamous Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz and Ariana Grande as Glinda the Good Witch. Several social media users, however, noticed a glaring mistake on the dolls’ packaging. “LMAO Universal pictures put the wrong website for @wickedmovie on the back of their dolls for kids. It leads to a porn website,” wrote one user. Another user assumed nefarious purposes, accusing the website being put on the packaging on purpose. “Wicked movie doll for kids is promoting a porn site, they really are wicked for doing this. Who’s the pedophile at @Mattel that did this? You can’t tell me this was a mistake, are you hiring idiots over there or just perverted [pedophiles]?”

The dolls were quickly removed from retailers like Amazon, Target, and Walmart. The film’s official website is “WickedMovie.com,” but the packaging contained the URL to the porn site “wicked.com.” Mattel issued a statement on the misprint. “Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel ‘Wicked’ collection dolls, primarily sold in the U.S., which intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page,” the toy company told Variety. “We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this. Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children. Consumers who already have the product are advised to discard the product packaging or obscure the link and may contact Mattel Customer Service for further information.”

Packaged dolls with the misprint quickly hit resale sites like eBay, despite recommendations from Mattel of disposing the packaging. The dolls have been sold for as much as $100 online. One site had Glinda sell for as much as $450. The film is being released in two parts, with part one slated to be released on November 22nd in time for Thanksgiving. Part two is anticipated to be released November 2025.
