In one of the most stunning upsets in recent NCAA wrestling history, Oklahoma State’s Wyatt Hendrickson defeated Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson in the 285-pound title match Saturday night—and gave all the glory to Jesus Christ.

The dramatic victory unfolded in front of former President Donald Trump at the NCAA Wrestling Championships. Hendrickson, a U.S. Air Force second lieutenant, pulled off the improbable win against the heavy favorite, then fired off a bold and faithful message on social media.

“That just happened. Nothing is impossible when you have God by your side!” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Hendrickson expanded on his faith in the post-match press conference, giving thanks where it mattered most.

“First, I just want to thank my family. I want to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for blessing me,” he said. “In that last shot, I was in on that leg, and there was a little extra push behind me to get that takedown. I don’t think that was by chance.”

He shared how a visit to Life Church earlier in the week inspired him. The sermon focused on the biblical story of David and Goliath, an image that resonated deeply with Hendrickson, who was seen as the underdog going into the match.

“David had a vision of victory before he stepped on the mat,” he said. “Even though he went after Goliath and everyone was like, ‘This can’t be done,’ he had the mind of a champion.”

Hendrickson carried that mindset into the finals, determined to wrestle with courage and purpose. “I knew that my head had to be in the right place if I wanted to end up on top,” he said. “Going out there, I was courageous… I acted like I wanted to be a champion and wrestled like I wanted to be a champion.”

After the match, Hendrickson saluted Trump and shook his hand before sharing plans to continue his service in the U.S. Air Force.

In a moment that echoed the faith of a young shepherd standing before a giant, Hendrickson proved that when your strength comes from God, the impossible becomes possible.
