2018 has been a year of crazy pop culture moments; some interesting, some hilarious and some shocking. With the end of the year now coming to a close, we are taking a look back at some of the biggest entertainment moments of 2018 and how they changed us.

“Black Panther” Dominates the Box Office

“Black Panther” set a whole bunch of box office records. Becoming one of the first major motion pictures to feature an almost exclusively black cast, it was described as “a love letter to black culture.” In no time, it had kids everywhere yelling “Wakanda forever”. Entertainment Weekly named “The Women of Black Panther” among its “Entertainers of the Year.”

Roseanne Gets Cancelled

The hype from the highly anticipated re-boot of “Roseanne” was short-lived after the show’s star tweeted out a highly racist message to a former senior advisor to President Barack Obama resulting in the show being cancelled. Then producers decided to bring it back and Barr was written off, and the rest of the Conners went on to film without her. The controversy divided people apart.

Ariana Grande’s Love Life

Ariana Grande and long-time boyfriend Mac Miller split up in the spring, and then she went on to date SNL star Pete Davidson. Grande and Davidson got engaged after just a few weeks and then broke up soon after the tragic news of Mac Miller passing. Grande then came out with her newest song Thank U, Next which was consequently written about all of her exes. Grande was attacked by many in the media, being blammed for the passing of Miller.

The Royal Wedding

Meghan Markle, an actress best known for her role on “Suits”, was the lucky bride to Prince Harry, the younger of Lady Diana’s two sons. In an elaborate ceremony in front 600 guests and almost 30 million Americans tuned into their TV set, the couple exchanged vows in front of Bishop Michael Curry of Chicago, Illinois. The wedding ceremony was star-studded and truly memorable.

Serena Loses the U.S. Open

Tennis star Serena Williams made headlines when her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, was called out for an infraction from the bench. Williams then began to yell at the umpire calling him a “thief” and a “liar” causing the officials of the event to head onto the court to handle the issue. Her opponent Naomi Osaka went on to win the challenge but that didn’t stop the crowds from booing Osaka when she was presented with the trophy, and Williams comforted her opponent while the jeers echoed on.

Aretha Franklin Passes Away

On August of this year, the Queen of Soul passed away at age 76 from pancreatic cancer. Her funeral was as incredible as she was, featuring performances by the likes of Chaka Khan, Smokey Robinson, and Stevie Wonder.

Drake Plays Fortnite

In 2018, if you had young kids, you almost certainly watched them spend hours playing the online game Fortnite. Perhaps the most iconic moment in its swift rise to pop culture-obsession, however, was when Drake, along with Travis Scott, played live on the streaming platform Twitch, along with popular gamer Ninja. The stream broke all sorts of records, at one point receiving over 600,000 concurrent viewers to watch the pop stars play a video game.

Yodeling Kid

Mason Ramsey, whom you may know as “Yodeling Kid”, was caught on camera greeting customers in an Illinois Walmart with a yodeled rendition of “Lovesick Blues” and turned into a viral sensation. As a result, Ramsay performed at Coachella, performed on Ellen, and even signed a deal with Atlantic Records.

The “In My Feelings” Challenge

The “In My Feelings Challenge”—in which fans dance to Drake’s hit song “In My Feelings” from his Scorpion album from outside the passenger seat of their car—all started with a video of Instagram influencer TheShiggyShow. Sooner than later, the dance had taken the world by storm, receiving renditions by Will Smith, Dua Lipa, and many others.
