The Washington Commanders scored a 12-7 win over the Chicago Bears while playing two weeks ago, but the big story centered on Brian Robinson, Jr., who scored the game-winning touchdown.

Fans would have commended Robinson’s powerful showing for his team on a typical night, but this was an especially notable moment because it was Robinson’s first NFL touchdown just two months after he was shot.

At 5:28 p.m. on Aug. 28, Brian Robinson Jr. saw his football future flicker. Two teenage assailants approached Robinson on a crowded Washington D.C. street lined with restaurants and bars. They were brandishing guns and intended to rob the Washington Commanders rookie running back, police say.

Robinson fended off one attacker. The other shot Robinson twice, one bullet striking his right glute and the other passing through his right knee. Robinson’s injuries weren’t deemed life-threatening, but paramedics treated him on the scene and transported him to the hospital.

The potentially deadly encounter put his football career in question and forced him into a difficult recovery. “That was probably the lowest point I’ve ever been in my life,” Robinson recently admitted.

But less than two months later, he was back on the field. After the Thursday game, Robinson detailed his challenging journey to recovery, credited his team for helping him, and praised the Lord.

“My biggest goal [was] to find my way back on the football team,” Robinson said during a post-game interview, explaining how his teammates offered love and care during his training and recovery. “[They were] telling me God’s got a purpose for me, just keep going. … I stayed true to that.”

The player, who said he did everything in his power to get back on the field after the shooting, admitted it wasn’t always easy hearing everyone tell him the same thing over and over — but that the positive, faith-filled messages ended up paying off.

“My momma [was] just telling me God’s gotta plan for me, and I had to trust it … it was tough,” he said. “I truly believe God’s got a bigger purpose for me. And I’ve just gotta live through Him every day.” In a separate interview, he credited God for getting him back on the field.

Brian Robinson Jr.’s story is inspirational. First, he survives getting shot after an attempted robbery. He questioned whether he would play football again, but he kept the faith. Two months after getting shot, Robinson not only returned to the game he loves, but he made the winning touchdown. His story reminds us of the miracles that can happen when we keep our faith in God.

Like Robinson’s mother told him, God has a plan, and we may not always understand it, but we have to trust it. It can be hard to trust God when you don’t know what He has in store for you. However, we can always guarantee that His plan is much better than anything we could come up with. Keep your faith in God and watch the miracles He performs in your life.
