Carmelo Anthony has decided to end his professional basketball career. The 10-time All-Star announced he’s retiring after 19 seasons in the NBA. He posted a video on his social media pages discussing his career highlights from his basketball days at Oak Hill Academy to his college career in Syracuse and his NBA career with several teams.
He said, “I remember the days when I had nothing. Just a ball on the court and a dream of something more. But basketball was my outlet. My purpose was strong, my communities, the cities I represented with pride, and the fans that supported me along the way. I am forever grateful for those people and places because they made me Carmelo Anthony.”
Anthony continued, “But now the time has come for me to say goodbye to the court where I made my name, to the game that gave me purpose and pride. With this bittersweet goodbye to the NBA, I am excited about what the future holds for me.” In the video, Anthony said he was passing the torch to his son, Kiyan, as he prepares to level up his basketball career. According to 247 Sports, Kiyan is a four-star recruit at Christ The King Regional in New York.
Anthony also said that his legacy lies with his son, not his feats on the court or the praise or awards he’s received. He urged his son to chase his dreams and let nothing get in his way. Anthony was part of the legendary 2003 NBA draft class, the number three overall pick for the Denver Nuggets, in front of Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh and behind LeBron James and Darko Milicic.
He played seven seasons with the Nuggets before being traded to the New York Knicks in one of the biggest blockbuster deals in the organization’s history. Anthony helped electrify the Knicks’ fan base for over six years, making his last All-Star team in his final season with the Knicks in 2016-17. He also played for the Houston Rockets, the Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Lakers, and the Portland Trail Blazers.
Anthony ends his career as a 10-time All-Star, an NCAA champion with Syracuse, a three-time Olympic gold medalist, a member of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team, and the 2012-13 NBA scoring champion. He averaged 22.5 points per game for his career and shot a career 44.7% from the field.
Only LeBron James, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Dirk Nowitzki, Wilt Chamberlain and Shaquille O’Neal scored more than Anthony, who finishes his career with 28,289 points. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said, “Carmelo Anthony is one of the NBA’s all-time great players and ambassadors. We congratulate him on a remarkable 19-year career and look forward to seeing him in the Hall of Fame.”
He may be retiring from the NBA, but Anthony will remain part of international basketball for a few more months. He’s one of the ambassadors to the Basketball World Cup, FIBA’s biggest event, which takes place this summer in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan. Congratulations to Carmelo Anthony, and much success on his future endeavors!
