The world seems fascinated by anything occult-related lately. If it isn’t a creature of the undead variety (you know, vampires, werewolves, zombies, oh my!) then it’s magic, witchcraft, and other ghostly enterprises. With the Harry Potter 7.1 about to release in theaters next week it’s no wonder that we are still so fixated on such darkly fun topics.
Fashionistas and similar artsy folk like designers Karl Lagerfield and Marc Jacobs are getting nods as spinners of magic and wonder in a new art exhibition called “Contemporary Magic” that has them (and many others) represented on a very special deck of tarot cards. The New York Times reports the following on the exhibition:
“Designers and cultural producers are in the business of divining the future. Now, thanks to a new exhibition at the National Arts Club, some of the world’s leading creatives have made a full-fledged jump to the dark side. Curated by Stacy Engman, “Contemporary Magic: A Tarot Deck Art Project” features the minor and major arcana as reinterpreted by 78 art and fashion world luminaries who were each matched with a card based on themes that recur in their work. Among the newly anointed mystics are Karl Lagerfeld (King of Wands), Marc Jacobs (Knight of Pentacles), John Currin (Ten of Cups) and Tracey Emin (the Empress). And in an occult line call that would have taken a master magician to adjudicate, Mickalene Thomas gets the nod as the High Priestess.”
You can see various tarot cards from the exhibition online at the New York Times, as well as additional photos here and here.
