An international sporting organization has sparked controversy by suspending a Christian athlete for making the sign of the cross during the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. Serbian judo world champion Nemanja Majdov, 28, faces a five-month suspension handed down by the International Judo Federation (IJF) for alleged breaches of its code of conduct, including displaying religious symbols on the field of play.

The suspension, announced on Aug. 31, stems from Majdov’s actions at the Paris Olympics, where the athlete was seen making the sign of the cross before his match and again after his victory. The IJF argues that the act violates their strict regulations about maintaining religious neutrality during competition. Additionally, Majdov was cited for removing his judogi (uniform) on the field of play and refusing to bow to his opponent at the end of the contest, further exacerbating the situation.

Majdov, a devout Christian, has openly expressed his gratitude to God throughout his career. His gesture of making the sign of the cross, a deeply meaningful act in his faith, was a way of acknowledging his reliance on God during one of the most important moments in his athletic life. Despite facing criticism, Majdov stands firm in his beliefs.

In a Sept. 15 Instagram post, Majdov addressed the suspension and expressed disappointment with the IJF’s decision but reaffirmed his unwavering faith.

“The Lord has given me everything, both for me personally and for my career, and He is number one for me, and I am proud of that,” Majdov wrote. “And that will not change under any circumstances. Glory to Him, and thanks for everything.”

His post has garnered attention and support from fellow athletes and fans who admire his determination to remain faithful, even in the face of professional setbacks.

The International Judo Federation responded to the controversy by defending its decision. The IJF stated that its rules are designed to ensure that the field of play remains neutral and focused solely on judo. The IJF emphasized that these regulations apply equally to all athletes, regardless of their cultural or religious background.

“Our rules regarding the display of religious or other signs are strictly related to the field of play, which is a space dedicated exclusively for judo and where only the judo-specific signs and rules are on display, equally for all,” the IJF said in a statement.

The Federation further explained that Majdov had been warned on multiple occasions prior to this incident, including incidents in 2018 and 2022, when he similarly made the sign of the cross. Majdov was reportedly informed at the time that repeated violations would result in disciplinary action.

The IJF’s Disciplinary Commission also highlighted the importance of respect and proper behavior in the sport of judo, stating that these values are fundamental to “the spirit of Judo.” Bowing, rather than religious gestures, is seen as a sign of respect in judo culture, and Majdov’s refusal to bow to his opponent was cited as another reason for the suspension.

Despite the suspension, Majdov remains resolute in his commitment to both his sport and his faith. Rather than viewing the punishment as a setback, the Serbian Olympian sees it as a new challenge and an opportunity for growth.

“Nothing new for me personally, just a new page in my career and a new life experience,” Majdov wrote on Instagram. “I’m sorry that such a beautiful and difficult sport like judo has fallen to such things.”

He went on to reflect on his successful career, expressing gratitude for the many medals he has won and the opportunity to fulfill the dreams of both himself and his family.

“God gave me a great career, seven European and three world medals,” Majdov said. “When I started, I dreamed of winning at least one big medal and thus succeeding in my life and the life of my family, who sacrificed everything for my career.”
