Cleveland Browns quarterback Jameis Winston delivered more than just a stellar performance in the Browns’ unexpected 24-19 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also delivered a powerful message of faith, pointing to God as the ultimate source of victory in both football and life.
Before the nationally televised game, Winston, 30, spoke with conviction, quoting Proverbs 21:31 when asked what it would take for the Browns (3-8) to defeat the division-leading Steelers (8-3).
“The horse is prepared for battle, but victory comes from the Lord,” Winston said confidently. “I’m depending on the Lord.”
How did they expect the Steelers to beat this man, on this night? He was blessed to play in the snow he didn’t have to play in it. “day by day. 1 play at a time”. That horse certainly was prepared for battle. Jameis may not win, but he never loses.

Despite the cold winter weather at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland, Winston was undeterred, seeing the conditions as an opportunity to honor God.
“I am so happy and grateful that the Lord has blessed me to play in some snow, to be in true football weather in Cleveland, Ohio, to give Him the glory,” he said.
After the game, Winston reflected on the team’s success and his ability to maintain confidence, turning once again to Scripture. Citing Proverbs 3:5, he shared one of his favorite verses:
“Trust in the Lord with your whole heart and lean not to your own understanding,” he said.
“I got faith, man. I got faith that I can make something happen at any single time,” Winston proclaimed, emphasizing his reliance on God even in challenging circumstances.
Winston’s bold declarations of faith are nothing new. From his college days to his professional career, the former Heisman Trophy winner has consistently given glory to God.
In 2013, after winning the Heisman Trophy and leading Florida State University to a national championship, Winston immediately thanked God in his acceptance speech. His journey since then has been a testament to redemption and grace, as he has overcome various off-the-field controversies, including past allegations and legal issues, to become a vocal advocate for his faith.
In 2016, Winston and his wife were baptized during a spiritual retreat for professional athletes. Since then, his faith has remained central to his life and career.
Winston’s social media profiles make his priorities clear. On X (formerly Twitter), his bio reads: “1. God 2. School (Learning Everyday) 3. Dream Forever,” along with the hashtag #Phil413, a reference to Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” His Instagram bio mirrors this commitment with the simple statement, “God 1st.”
Winston’s ministry extends beyond the football field. Earlier this year, a video surfaced of him passionately preaching at a church, where he encouraged believers to embrace their faith with enthusiasm.
“How many times has He lifted you off your feet when you didn’t ask Him to?” Winston asked the congregation. “That’s how you know that you are worthy. That’s how you know that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and gave us the victory.”
His words resonate deeply with fans and fellow believers alike, as Winston encourages others to “be on fire for Jesus.”
