The holidays can be a hectic time for many families. You may find your partner spending more working, or the family may be caught up in a lot of activities. The world is pulling at everyone and it may seem like there isn’t enough time in the day. On day 11 of the 12 days of service challenge, take time to make a meal for your family. Make sure this isn’t a rushed meal, but one that you put a good amount of thought and love into. It is a very small gesture that can go a long way, especially if it’s something that you don’t do often.
Ask your family what they want to include on the menu. If there is something your spouse or family enjoys collectively, consider making that dish. If you have children, enlist their helping with some of the items that will be included in the meal. If you have really young children, allow them to help you do the stirring, whatever is age-appropriate. This is a great bonding experience that will pay off when you guys all gather.
This is also a great way to spend quality time with family during the holidays. Unfortunately, many people don’t take the time to eat breakfast or dinner with family anymore. The Atlantic reports that the average American eats one in five meals in the car, and the majority of American families report eating one meal together less than five days a week. This could be a meaningful time you spend with your loved ones that you continue past the challenge.
During your meal, consider saying a prayer together. If you don’t know where to start, begin with this prayer: Dear God, we come before you today as a family and thank You for Your love for us, reflected through the birth of Your Son, Jesus Christ. We thank You for the food that you have placed before us. As we gather and eat together, may we remember Your goodness towards our family. We pray that the energy we get from this meal be used to do things that glorify Your name. Amen.
Are you up for the challenge?
