Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter, Emmy Russell, honored the country legend’s legacy. On the CMT Music Awards red carpet, Russell told Fox News Digital, “The most advice that she has given me throughout the years was to love God. She was such a lover of God, and I think it was more of, ‘Listen to Him and follow His voice.'”

Russell wants the public to remember Lynn as “an ordinary country girl” who was “everybody’s friend,” saying, “There was nothing fake.” Russell and Lukas Nelson were nominated for CMT Performace of the Year for “Lay Me Down,” a song from “Coal Miner’s Daughter: A Celebration of the Life and Music of Loretta Lynn.” However, the award went to Cody Johnson for “Til You Can’t.”

Russell told Fox News Digital that performing at Lynn’s tribute was “special,” adding, “That was my first time getting in front of people and not seeing her. It was really honoring. I felt a presence like maybe her presence was there. It was really special.”

Loretta Lynn died last October in her sleep at 90 years old. “Coal Miner’s Daughter: A Celebration of the Life & Music of Loretta Lynn” was held at the Grand Ole Opry House in Tennessee shortly after the country music legend’s death. Some of country music’s biggest names were in attendance, including Martina McBride, Little Big Town, and Tim McGraw. The special, hosted by Jenna Bush Hager, was a tribute to Lynn’s music legacy and all those she inspired during her career.

Several heartwarming moments happened throughout the night, including Lynn’s granddaughter, Tayla, and daughter, Patsy, remembering their matriarch’s impact on the world. Throughout Lynn’s 60-year career, she won every award a musician could win and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1988. She knew her songs were trailblazing for country music but said she was writing the truth for many rural women.

Lynn told The Associated Press in 1995, “I could see that other women was going through the same thing because I worked the clubs. I wasn’t the only one that was living that life, and I’m not the only one that’s going to be living today what I’m writing.” Russell told Fox News Digital that people love country music because it’s honest, saying, “It can make you cry, it can make you laugh, it can make you feel good. It’s very truthful.”

Grandmothers always give the most straightforward yet most profound advice; the case is the same for Loretta Lynn’s family. Loretta Lynn impacted the world with her music and had a similar effect on her family with her words. The advice to “love God” is simple, yet it can be life-changing. Hopefully, Russell will continue to follow her grandmother’s advice, and her words will continue to change people’s lives.
