Brianna Wakefield, daughter of Late Red Sox great Tim Wakefield, three out the first pitch at Fenway Park in honor of her father and his teammates who won the 2004 World Series, ending their 86-year title drought. Both Tim, and his wife Stacy passed away recently. Their children, Brianna, 17, and Trevor, 19, led the ’04 team onto the field for the ceremony while carrying the World Series trophy. Brianna threw the ceremonial first pitch to former catcher and current Red Sox assistant coach, Jason Varitek.

“I just thought it was fitting for her to walk off the field with the World Series trophy,” said former Red Sox player, Johnny Damon. “Such a great day. Those kids are going through a lot and they know that they have a lot of family, the team that we had in 2004. They can always count on us.” Damon opened up about how much emotion was in Fenway Park that day. “We’re family out there,” he said. ”(Tim’s) kids are going to count on us moving forward and we are all going to be there for them.”

Tim Wakefield sadly passed away in October from an aggressive form of brain cancer. The famed knuckleball pitcher was only 57. In February, Stacy Wakefield passed away after battling pancreatic cancer. The Red Sox announced Stacy’s passing on behalf of their family by saying, “It is with deep sadness that we share that our beloved mother, daughter, sister, niece, and aunt, Stacy, passed away today at her home in Massachusetts. She was surrounded by her family and dear friends, as well as her wonderful caretakers and nurses. The loss is unimaginable, especially in the wake of losing Tim just under five months ago. Our hearts are beyond broken.” The statement continued, “We will remember Stacy as a strong, loving, thoughtful and kind person, who was as down-to-earth as they come. We feel so lucky to have had her in our lives, and we take comfort in the fact that she will be reunited with Tim, the love of her life.”
